Popular television host Rufai Oseni has called for an end to the perennial flooding that affects several parts of Lagos during the rainy season, as large areas of Nigeria’s commercial hub continue to suffer from severe floods following recent downpours.
Oseni made the call in a social media post shortly after completing his morning exercise routine. He also took a swipe at the political class, who often tout Lagos as a “mega city,” arguing that true mega cities do not experience such levels of flooding.
"I want to tell you that exercise is good for the body. This morning I just ran 4 km. But I want to talk about mega city Lagos. We call it a mega city, but when it rains, water is everywhere. Everywhere is like a swimming pool. Please do something about it," Oseni said.
Several parts of the city were heavily impacted by flooding on Wednesday morning as torrential rain submerged streets and disrupted movement across Lagos.
Videos posted by residents on social media showed vehicles and motorcycles struggling through waterlogged roads in areas such as the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ago Palace Way, Apple Junction, Ago Bridge, and Mile 2.
In a statement posted on X, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, sympathized with residents who suffered discomfort and disruption.
"We sincerely sympathize with all residents who were affected by the flash floods witnessed in parts of the state yesterday. We understand the discomfort and disruption it caused, and we deeply empathize with those affected," Wahab said.
He explained that Lagos’s coastal geography, combined with heavy rainfall and tidal lock, makes the city naturally vulnerable to flooding.
"As a coastal city, Lagos is naturally vulnerable to flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall combined with tidal lock," he added.
