A video showing the moment the federal government began the demolition of unauthorized structures on the government’s right of way for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway has emerged.

Minister of Works, David Umahi in a chat with journalists on Sunday, April 28 said the popular Landmark Beach Resort won't be affected but the shanties erected along the government's right of way will.

The video that has emerged, however, shows otherwise as facilities of the resort were being pulled down as their owners looked on.

According to the Minister, individuals affected by the demolition will be adequately compensated as he added that documentation will start on May 2-3.

The demolition of properties along that axis has generated mixed reactions on social media.

The commentary has been centered around its impact on employment for those affected.

Peter Gregory Obi, who has become the biggest critic of the move says the action could lead to could lead to the loss of thousands of jobs nationwide.

In a series of posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party said that the project is a misplaced priority given the urgent economic and security crisis prevalent in the country.

While admitting the economic benefits of the project, Obi said that the construction could lead to the loss of more jobs amid a high unemployment rate.

Social media users have reacted differently.
