Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Thursday, August 17, paid a visit to Kyiv, the Ukraine capital.

According to report, this would be her first visit to Ukraine after 15 years.

Upon arrival, Iweala met Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. He expressed his appreciation to the WTO for its support and assistance in dealing with the challenges from the war with Russia.

Amid their discussion on the development of trade and its digitalisation, Iweala visited Irpin, in Kyiv where she was shown the massive destruction caused by Russia's war.

The Mayor of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushyn took to Telegram to speak on Iweala's visit, where he showed her the aftermath of Russians' attack on the town.

"The last time Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala visited Ukraine was 15 years ago, so today she was both impressed by our development over the time and by the terrible destruction that the Russians inflicted on us. She informed that the World Trade Organization will join the reconstruction of our country. Financial assistance will be provided at the state level," Markushyn said.

He added, "The World Trade Organization is launching programmes to support small and medium-sized businesses in Ukraine in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Policy."
