It has been revealed that female students in Katsina performed better than their male counterparts in the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Commissioner for Education, Badamasi Lawal, made this known at the closing ceremony of the Girl Education Project (GEP-III) on Thursday in Katsina.

The official attributed the performance to the commitment of the government to empower girls through educational programmes.

In 2021, 18,321 students sat for the WASSCE paid for by the state government; 10,441 were male, 7,880 were female.

The results showed 4,627 female students scored credit in English language – 58.7 per cent; 5,632 males scored credit – 54 per cent.

Lawal announced that in Mathematics, 5,678 girls scored credits, while 4,726 boys scored credits.

Overalls, the girls scored more credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language.

At least 56 per cent of them got five credits as against 48 per cent of their male counterparts who passed in five subjects.
