The United States Mission in Nigeria has again cautioned Nigerians to follow proper travel rules, stressing that visa overstays could have wider consequences for other applicants.

In a statement shared on its X handle, the mission noted that respecting immigration laws in the United States is key to ensuring fair access for genuine travellers. It explained that when some individuals overstay or violate their visa conditions, it can influence how future applications from Nigeria are viewed.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The mission added that many Nigerians visit the U.S. for education, business, tourism, and family reasons, urging them to always adhere to visa terms throughout their stay.

It also raised concerns about visa fra¥d and misuse of travel documents, encouraging the public to help protect the system. Those with credible information were advised to report to official consular fra¥d prevention channels.

The mission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe and lawful travel between both countries, while ensuring compliant travellers are not affected by the actions of others.
