Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2018 endorsed his deputy, Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party two months after he publicly declared him as unfit.

The old video which surfaced on Dele Momodu’s social media page, has raised eyebrows as Obasanjo and Atiku are known not to have grudges as a result of some unresolved issues.

Momodu described the video as former President Olusegun Obasanjo's best speech ever.

Obasanjo during the speech in October 2018, said Atiku alongside prominent political and religious figures, paid him a visit at his Abeokuta residence and asked for his forgiveness and as a believer and a Christian, he forgave him. According to him, Atiku is not perfect and has never claimed to be a saint.

He said, “Atiku has never claimed to be a saint. Have you ever claimed to be a saint? And I will never describe him as such. I will never describe any human being alive let alone calling him a messiah. On an occasion in the past where I said someone was not a messiah, Nigerians out of bad belle where up in arms. For me as a Christian, the only messiah I know and have is Jesus Christ and even then the man aspect of him was imperfect while the divine aspect of him was perfectly messianic.

“I believe the statement that vice president Atiku, now candidate Atiku and to become President Atiku proves it.

“Atiku accepts responsibility for his mistakes, shows remorse and seeks forgiveness from his political party and when you vote for him as Nigerians, it will be in total forgiveness of whatever he might have done in the past. He asked for forgiveness from me and as a believer and Christian as such I have forgiven him in accordance to the teachings and instructions of my saviour.”

Atiku Abubakar who was contesting under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with Peter Obi as his running mate, lost the election to President Muhammadu Buhari who was seeking reelection.

Four years later, Obasanjo declared support for Peter Obi, who had left the PDP, to become the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Atiku who did not get Obasanjo’s support accused him of being upset because he opposed his third term bid to be the president.

Both Atiku and Peter Obi lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

Displeased at the outcome of the election, the two opposition parties petitioned the court in the bid to nullify Tinubu’s victory.
