Victory for Wike's camp over Fubara as rivers assembly takes crucial decision

In what appears like a victory for the camp of Nyesom Wike, the Rivers state House of Assembly has passed an important bill into law.

The state's House of Assembly on Monday, April 22, passed the local government Amendment Bill into law without the assent of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The Assembly on Monday defied the state High Court’s order directing the status quo on the issue of elongating the tenure of elected local government officials, which formed part of the amendment.

The House was said to have also screened and confirmed members of the chairman and other members of the Assembly Service Commission in the spirit of the new law, The Nation reports.

The Bill was represented before the House by the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack and debated upon by members.

The speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule put the question, and with a two-third majority votes, the House agreed to override Fubara and passed the bill into law.

PDP expels Wike’s councillor after declaring support for Fubara

Meanwhile, days after resigning from his position and declaring support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state, the former leader of the Obio/Akpor legislative council, Honourable Achor Nna was expelled by his ward chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The expulsion letter was contained in a letter dated March 9, 2024, and signed by the PDP Ward 9 Chairman in Obio/Akpor LGA, Collins Chukwu.

The ward chairman accused the lawmaker of failing to defend himself from allegations of misconduct and misappropriation despite receiving multiple invitations to do so.

Rivers PDP coordinators dump Wike, support Fubara

The political crisis in Rivers state has worsened as the coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political arm of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, formed by ex-governor Nyesom Wike, have announced their withdrawal from the initiative.
