Incidents of cannibalism in Southeast Nigeria have been documented by security agencies following different raids carried out on camps of criminals and kidnappers.

In 2021, a joint security task force that raided kidnappers’ camps in southeastern Nigeria discovered some people who eat fresh human flesh.

The task force included the Nigerian Military, Police and Department of State Services (DSS).

The Director of DSS in Imo State, Wilcox Idaminabo, said the operation was carried out in Orsu Local Government Area in Imo State, as well as in Uli in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was learnt that the kidnappers invaded a community each in Orsu and Ihiala Local Government Areas and took land areas for themselves.

"When we got there, we noticed the community had been abandoned, and these boys had taken over the community. They carve out lands for themselves, and that is another brand of insurgency.

"The place is just a ghost town; everybody has disappeared from these towns," the DSS boss said.

During the raid, the team rescued one Eze Iheanacho Ndukwe from Okigwe, who was kidnapped some days ago.

Idaminabo said human parts were also scattered all over the place.

"Surprisingly, in this 21st century, we noticed people still practise cannibalism-eating human flesh because we also found roasted human flesh there," he said.

Also in 2025, the Department of State Services (DSS) made shocking revelations before the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that operatives of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), were once caught eating human flesh.

Testifying in the terrorism trial of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a DSS official told the court that members of the separatist group were involved in gruesome acts of violence, including cannibalism, ritual killings, and attacks on security personnel.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the DSS operative recounted how his team encountered about seven ESN members in a hideout, with human heads in their possession, some of them allegedly consuming human flesh.

“They claimed the human flesh was for spiritual fortification,” the official told the court.

In September 2026, the Abia State Police Command uncovered 28 human skulls and bones following a raid on suspected criminal camps located in the forests at Umuaku, Isuochi, as well as another camp at Nneato, Isuochi.

In a statement, the police said the skulls and bones are suspected to be the remains of kidnap victims

The raid was carried out under Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State, which aims to rid Abia of criminal elements.

The police stated that the investigation and monitoring of the area are ongoing, adding that efforts are being intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that Abia remains a no-hiding place for criminals and their activities. He encouraged Abians, as partners in crime prevention, to collaborate with the police by reporting any security concerns to the nearest Police Station.
