VIDEO: Arise anchor Femi Akinsanya burst into tears on air after death of colleague Sommie

Arise News anchor Adefemi Akinsanya could not hold back tears on air as she read newspaper reports announcing the death of her colleague, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.

Akinsanya, who leads the International News segment on the *Arise Morning Show*, broke down while presenting her bulletin.

Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly called *Sommie*, died following a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

Her death has dominated both traditional and social media, with tributes continuing to pour in.

In a statement signed by Adiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of Arise News management, the organisation described Maduagwu as “a vibrant voice” who deeply connected with viewers.

“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” the statement read.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

Maduagwu, 29, joined ARISE News as a dynamic and engaging broadcaster whose work resonated with audiences. Beyond journalism, she was also a trained lawyer and was described by colleagues as professional, supportive, and a dear friend.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

Efforts to obtain an update from the FCT Police Command proved unsuccessful, as officials had yet to respond to calls and text messages as of press time.
