There has been an uproar in Turkey following the renaming of a mosque after Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen became a household name in Turkey after a remarkable loan spell with Galatasaray last season, where he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions for Okan Buruk’s side.

The 26-year-old clinched the Super Lig Golden Boot with 26 goals in 31 league matches, helping the Yellow and Reds to domestic glory.

His outstanding performances convinced Galatasaray’s hierarchy to break the bank for a permanent transfer from Napoli this summer.

After protracted negotiations with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, the club secured the Super Eagles star for €75 million.

The announcement of Osimhen’s permanent signing sparked widespread celebrations among Galatasaray fans.

However, controversy has erupted after The Bulut Mosque in Konya appeared on Google Maps as the “Victor Osimhen Mosque,” suggesting the worship centre had been renamed in his honour.

“It’s a shame to name a non-Muslim and make a mockery of it,” said Zeki Yaylacı, a member of the mosque community.

“We consider it an insult to Muslims, the mosque community, and mosques themselves.”

Meanwhile, Osimhen was absent from Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory over Gaziantep last weekend, with coach Okan Buruk stating the striker needs more time to regain full fitness.
