Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has questioned the criteria for awarding the Man of the Match prize in the UEFA Champions League.

This comes after Los Blancos skipper Federico Valverde was adjudged Man of the Match following the club’s 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in their UCL opener at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Frenchman Kylian Mbappe gave Mourinho’s side the lead in the 14th minute after capitalising on Yann Bisseck’s mistake.

Valverde later doubled the lead for the Spanish giants following a goalkeeping blunder from Josep Martinez seven minutes later, before Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit for Inter in the 77th minute.

Speaking in his post-match reaction, Mourinho named goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as the deserving winner of the Man of the Match award while aiming a dig at the organisers.

“Courtois could have been the Man of the Match tonight… who gave the award maybe was sleeping,” Mourinho said.

“But I don’t want to take anything away from Valverde. But if Courtois doesn’t get the Man of the Match tonight, it’ll never happen!”
