Two Nigerian US Air Force soldiers jailed over $1.68m cyber fraud scheme

A United States court has reportedly jailed two Nigerians who were members of the US Air Force after they were convicted for their roles in an international cyber fraud scheme.

According to a report by DW Africa, the Nigerian-American soldiers were convicted after defrauding victims through a scheme involving stolen credit card information and phishing emails.

The report identified the two soldiers as Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu and Harafat Mogaji.

“Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu was sentenced to 111 months in a federal prison, while Harafat Mogaji was sentenced to 78 months,” DW Africa wrote in a post shared on Facebook on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

The two soldiers reportedly targeted businesses and nonprofit organisations across the United States, using stolen credit card information and phishing emails to redirect funds and payments into accounts controlled by their network.

“The network took $1.68 million from one victim in the US state of Iowa and over $720,000 from another in Ohio,” part of the report read.

In addition to their prison sentences, the two were ordered to pay more than $1.2 million in restitution.

“Odimegwu was ordered to pay about $366,600 in restitution and Mogaji about $995,700. The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations,” the report stated.
