Twitter ban, Lekki Massacre, others that made Buhari a mistake - Inibehe Effiong

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has recalled how former President Muhammadu Buhari banned Twitter, a social media platform now known as X.

MyNigeria recalls that Buhari banned Twitter after the platform deleted a tweet he posted to warn secessionists against demanding the breakup of Nigeria.

He had posted, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

The post was massively reported by many Nigerians of southeast extraction, leading to Twitter deleting the President's post.

This led to the platform being banned in Nigeria, a ban that lasted for months.

Following Buhari's death, Effiong took to X to reflect on the incident and others involving Buhari.

He wrote, "Buhari banned X (Twitter) because of his fragile ego. He refused to transmit power to his Vice President as constitutionally required, despite not being in good health or in the country for months.

"I don’t even want to talk about the Lekki Toll Gate massacre. He made a nonsense of the economy and allowed criminals to operate freely in his cabinet.

"After destroying the country, he supervised a fraudulent election that brought a terrible successor who has continued from where he stopped in their Nigeria destruction agenda.

"Which institution did he reform? Even electoral reforms he couldn’t leave behind. Buhari was a tragic mistake of history."
