Trump fulfills promise to Nigeria, sends over 200 ventilators to fight coronavirus

The government of the United States has handed over two-hundred ventilators to Nigeria as part of its effort to help the country wage war against the COVID-19 crisis.

Presenting the ventilators on Tuesday, August 11, in Abuja, U.S ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Bert Leonard, said the US is committed to helping African countries defeat the global pandemic.

Legit.ng gathers that the machines were handed to the Premier Medical Warehouse in the nation’s capital, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The good gesture is coming barely two months President Donald Trump promised to help Nigeria with ventilating machines.

It would be recalled that President Trump, on April 28, stated that Nigeria would do anything to have the life-saving ventilators needed in the world's fight against the novel coronavirus disease.

The U.S president later promised that his country would give Nigeria 200 or more ventilators to aid in the fight against the rampaging disease.

The minister of information, Lai Mohammed, at a briefing in Abuja confirmed the US president's promise.

Nigeria presently has 46,867 confirmed of coronavirus after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 290 new cases in 16 states.

33,346 people who later tested negative have been discharged while fatality figure stands at 950 deaths, with Lagos still the epicentre of the virus in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported earlier that the federal government on Thursday, April 2, drew to itself a whirlpool of criticism after taking to the micro-blogging platform Twitter to beg the founder of Tesla Inc, an electronic company, for ventilators.

Elon Musk, a South African-American billionaire who is the founder of Tesla, had earlier tweeted on Tuesday, March 31, that there are FDA-approved ventilators to be distributed free to countries hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Responding to the tweet, the federal government through the official handle of the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning begged Musk for ventilators, adding that the country is in need of about 100-150 of the ventilation-producing devices. coronavirus.html
