Troops raise alarm over alleged plan to recruity repentant Boko Haram members

Nigerian troops involved in counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East have voiced apprehensions over a supposed order directing them to collaborate with ex-Boko Haram members recently reintegrated into society through the Borno State Government’s deradicalisation initiative.

Anonymously, military sources expressed concern that this development has unsettled soldiers operating in various parts of Borno State, fearing it could lead to leaks of sensitive intelligence and hinder ongoing operations against insurgents.

Some of these former Boko Haram combatants, who publicly disavowed violence and pledged loyalty to Nigeria during recent reintegration programs, are now reportedly attached to local security units aiding military efforts.

The soldiers claim this move is part of Borno State’s attempt to showcase the success of its rehabilitation strategy, a plan subject to criticism from victims, the public, and certain security officials.

Despite these claims, many troops remain doubtful about the genuine commitment of some ex-insurgents, even after their participation in rehabilitation schemes.

One soldier remarked that deploying ex-combatants alongside security forces has sparked worry among frontline personnel.

“The government wants to prove that the reintegration programme is working, so some of these ‘repentant’ Boko Haram members are being attached to security groups that work with troops in operations,” the soldier said.

“But many of us are uncomfortable with the arrangement because there have been cases in the past where information leaked and operations were compromised. Trust is a major issue.”
