Wilfred Ndidi could follow in the footsteps of Emmanuel Amunike as the next Nigerian international to play for Barcelona.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has given the green light for the club to pursue the Super Eagles midfielder as a free agent next summer.

The 27-year-old is expected to replace Oriol Romeu, who is set to depart the Catalan giants after failing to impress in the defensive midfield role since joining from Girona last season.

Romeu was brought in as a replacement for midfield maestro Sergio Busquets, who left for Major League Soccer (MLS) last summer.

Reports from Spanish outlet Sport suggest that Xavi views Ndidi as fitting the profile for his team and believes he will seamlessly adapt to their style of play.

Negotiations for Ndidi's transfer is anticipated to commence in the summer. His contract with Leicester City expires at the end of the season, and as of now, there have been no discussions regarding a possible extension.

The Nigerian international has played a pivotal role in Leicester City's promotion back to the Premiership just one season after their relegation.
