Traffic looms as Ibadan Poly students protest renaming of institution

The Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) has issued a diversion advisory to commuters in Ibadan ahead of the ongoing students’ protest at The Polytechnic Ibadan main gate.

According to the agency, the traffic diversion was necessary to help motorists avoid being caught in prolonged gridlock, which can waste productive hours.

OYRTMA SAID Motorists heading towards Eleyele, Apete, Ijokodo, and nearby areas axis from Sango and vice versa are advised to take alternative routes through Dugbe, Mokola, or Ajibode to avoid delays and unnecessary confrontation.”

“Furthermore, people moving from Sango, Elewure, Awolowo Junction and under the bridge Secretariat main gate should also seek for alternative routes as there may likely be temporary blockage by the Student rampage,” THE AGENCY SAID.

MyNigeria reported that the students recently expressed their utmost disapproval and disappointment at the decision to rename their institution after the late former governor of Oyo State, Omololu Olunloyo.

The institution was renamed last Thursday by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State during the burial ceremony held for the late Omololu in Ibadan.

Reacting, the SUG issued a statement, saying the decision is unjustifiable and disregards the rich heritage and history of our beloved school.

"For over 50 years, The Polytechnic Ibadan has been a beacon of academic excellence, producing outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions to society. The name "The Polytechnic Ibadan" is synonymous with quality education and has earned respect and recognition nationwide. Renaming the Institution would erase its identity and legacy, causing irreparable harm to its reputation and alumni.

"We urge you to reconsider this decision and allow our school to retain its original name, which reflects its history, values, and mission. We are willing to engage in dialogue to find alternative solutions that benefit the institution.
We request an Immediate reversal of this decision and look forward to a prompt response," the students said.
