Veteran Nigerian musician and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has sparked widespread online debate after misidentifying a late Bayelsa traditional ruler as former militant leader Asari Dokubo in a viral political post.
In a post shared on his official X page on October 11, Charly Boy reshared a video showing a traditional leader delivering a fiery address demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu "surrender" over the country’s worsening cost-of-living crisis.
Captioning the clip, Charly Boy suggested that Dokubo, a prominent supporter of President Tinubu during the 2023 election cycle had turned against the administration.
"Asari say make Tinubu surrender. Say country too hard. Bulaba never renew him subscription," Charly Boy wrote.
However, fact-checks quickly confirmed that the activist misidentified the speaker. The man in the video was actually Moses Theophilus Kenibara VII, the late Amadabo of Moko-Ama in the Akassa Kingdom of Bayelsa State, who passed away recently at the age of 64.
In the viral footage, the late monarch delivered an impassioned plea in Pidgin English regarding non-functional domestic refineries, soaring fuel costs, and widespread food inflation:
"Tinubu, na me dey tell you, you no go fit fight. Tinubu surrender. The country too hard. This country is too hard. We dey vex.
"Look, our fuel, everything is too expensive in this country... We have refineries, but they're not working in this country. Nothing is working in this country, and we'll not continue in this situation. We're hungry, and this must stop. Tinubu, surrender. Hunger, make it go. Garri, come down. Fuel, come down,” Kenibara declared in the video.
The mistaken identity was largely driven by a physical resemblance between Kenibara and Asari Dokubo. Reports indicate that King Kenibara passed away between October 8 and 10, just days after the clip began gaining significant traction online.
Who Was Moses Theophilus Kenibara VII?
Beyond his traditional leadership as the Amadabo of Moko-Ama, Kenibara served as Chairman of the Akassa Clan Council of Chiefs and held leadership roles within the Central Zone of the Ijaw National Congress, advocating for peace, environmental remediation.
