As Nigerians took to the streets to lament their grievances to the federal government about the hardship in the country, some individuals have shared their thoughts.
A protester named Benjamin Chijioke was spotted on Day one of the nationwide protest on Thursday, August 1, expressing the hardships and high cost of living.
Chijoke, who travelled from Festac to Mile 2 to join the protest, noted that he would rather die on the street than at home.
He mentioned that the future of his son is at stake, hence his decision to participate in the protest.
He said, “I would rather die on the street than die at home. I can’t sit and watch the future of my son go to waste. I know I may not have a future again in Nigeria but my son’s future will not be wasted.”
Speaking on how the current economic hardship had affected his family, Chijoke said, “My son at 13 is a programmer. I can’t even buy data for him to learn more. I can’t even pay for tuition fees; millions of naira. At 13, he can program video games.”
In Abuja, the Nigeria Police stationed at the Eagles Square reportedly dispersed protesters with tear gas and pepper spray.
It was reported that the police shot canisters of teargas after first firing warning non-lethal shots at the ground.
This seemed to have affected a baby who was in the arms of a nursing mother who had joined the protest.
Angry at the act, the woman confronted the police officers and dared them to shoot.
As a result, other protesters joined the woman in confronting the police officers, causing the security operatives to immediately fire pepper spray to disperse the protesters.
The nursing mother stated that she decided to join the protesters at the Eagle Square after her husband was killed by bandits in Katsina State.
In another turn of event, a native doctor in Port Harcourt was seen joining the protest.
When quizzed upon his reason for participating in the nationwide hunger protest, he responded saying he was protesting for his ancestors.
According to the chief priest, people barely visit his shrine anymore or bring goats and other items due to the hardship.
