Tinubu hails D'Tigress on lifting 5th consecutive Afrobasket title

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, solidified their place in continental basketball history on Sunday night by winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title and their seventh overall.

The historic victory took place at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and was quickly celebrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a post on his verified X account, @officialABAT, the President praised the team’s outstanding performance, calling it a proud moment for Nigeria. He also expressed his full support for the players and coaching staff, congratulating them on their remarkable achievement.

“You did it, girls! @DtigressNG. Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall,” the President wrote.

“Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy. #MissionV – Done & Dusted,” he added, signing off with his initials, “~ PBAT”.

D’Tigress’ recent victory solidifies their position as the leading powerhouse in African women’s basketball, continuing an impressive winning streak that has been ongoing since 2017.

Led by Coach Rena Wakama, the team demonstrated outstanding discipline, resilience, and tactical brilliance throughout the tournament. This latest success has propelled Nigeria to the top spot as the nation with the most consecutive AfroBasket Women titles, highlighting the formidable strength of Nigeria’s women’s basketball program.
