A video has surfaced of President Bola Tinubu discussing the importance of reverting to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

In an interview from 2022 commemorating Nigeria's 62nd independence anniversary, Tinubu advocated for the reinstatement of the old national anthem.

The video resurfaced after President Tinubu signed a bill reinstating the old national anthem on the day of his one-year anniversary in office on May 29, 2024.

Accompanied by members of the National Assembly, he sang the newly reinstated national anthem for all to hear.

This decision follows Tinubu's interest years ago in changing the anthem back to the original, which he believes better represents the country.

In the old video, Tinubu expressed his desire to bring back the first national anthem, written by Lillian Jean William and composed by Frances Breda.

He emphasized that this anthem more accurately reflects the country, emphasizing themes of service, diversity, and commitment.

Tinubu stated, “If I had my way, I would bring back our first national anthem. It describes us much better. I don’t know why we changed it. It’s about service, diversity, commitment, and nation-building.”
