President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to express his condolences to the government and affected residents following the devastating flood.
The flood occurred after the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River in Borno State collapsed on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, causing significant damage to homes, hospitals, markets, schools, and various public facilities.
Upon his arrival at Maiduguri International Airport, President Tinubu was welcomed by Governor Babagana Zulum and other state officials.
He is expected to assess the impact of the flood on critical infrastructure, including residential areas, hospitals, markets, schools, and public facilities.
According to reports from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the flood was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the worst flooding the town has seen in three decades.
Over 23,000 households have been affected by the rapid rise in water levels that occurred over the weekend.
Other affected areas include the palace of the Shehu of Borno, government buildings, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and places of worships.
Approximately 80% of the animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo have been lost.
In a previous statement, President Tinubu expressed his genuine concern over the flooding and directed relevant government agencies to expedite rescue efforts and evacuate residents from communities affected by floods.
Since the flood disaster, several notable personalities have visited the northern state including former Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
