Those angry at Lagos underwater tunnel plan don't deserve to be Nigerians - Showunmi

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Segun Showunmi, has expressed excitement as Nigeria stands on the brink of an engineering renaissance - Lagos prepares to unveil a monumental 2.9-kilometre underwater tunnel beneath the historic Lagos Lagoon, the first of its kind on the African continent.

This submerged artery will rise from Ahmadu Bello Way on Victoria Island, pass through Snake Island, and surge toward Badagry, redefining how a nation moves.

More than a tunnel, this is a continental connector seamlessly fusing the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway with the vast Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway. The result: traffic bottlenecks dismantled, trade corridors expanded, and regional connectivity elevated to unprecedented heights.

Driven by a visionary Public-Private Partnership under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, this bold endeavour signals a new era of Nigerian infrastructure where ambition meets execution, and imagination is built in steel and stone beneath the sea.

"From blueprints to boots on the ground, the future is no longer on the horizon, it is beneath the waters, advancing relentlessly," Showunmi said on social media.

He earlier said, "If this does not make you happy for Nigeria, you don't deserve to be a citizen of this potentially great nation."
