The South-South Governors’ Forum has reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 20, 2025, the forum called for the reversal of President Tinubu’s declaration, arguing that the situation does not meet constitutional requirements.

The chairman, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, appealed to the federal government to seek a more peaceful resolution.

“To reduce tensions and establish a foundation for enduring peace, we propose the rescission of the state of emergency,” the statement read.

According to him, the governors acknowledged the president’s constitutional duty to maintain law and order but insisted that the crisis in Rivers State should be resolved through legal and constitutional means.

“The South-South Governors’ Forum expresses concern that the current political situation in Rivers State does not satisfy the criteria for declaring a state of emergency, as outlined in Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution,” the forum stated.

The forum also rejected the suspension of democratic institutions, emphasizing that the constitution outlines specific procedures for the removal of a governor and House of Assembly members.

“The time for dialogue is now,” the statement added, urging all parties to remain calm and uphold the rule of law.
