The moment Obasanjo, Wole Soyinka got 'verbal'; old video pops up

An incident occurred in Oyo state where former President Olusegun Obasanjo ordered some Yoruba monarchs to stand up and show respect for Governor Seyi Makinde, during the unveiling of the Iseyin campus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology on September 15.

This caused a stir as several traditional rulers demanded an apology from Obasanjo who in return refused, saying he stand by his action.

He noted that, he is unapologetic and uncompromising on the position that the governor of a state holds the highest office in the state and should, therefore, be given the due respect as enshrined in the constitution.

In a statement released, Obasanjo said; “By that position, the respect, protocol and dignity that must be given to the office by virtue of the constitution must not be denied. To do otherwise is to deride the office and the constitution."

However, playwright, poet and author, Professor Wole Soyinka, who is known to have banters with the former head of state for years, during a recent event mocked Obasanjo while mimicking his stand up order to the traditional rulers.

Soyinka and Obasanjo who were said to be good friends, visited each other, ate and drank together, had a fall out.

In an old video, Obasanjo was heard describing Soyinka as a gifted person but a bad political analyst.

In response, Soyinka said that Obasanjo was entitled to his opinion while recanting a statement made by late Oyetunde Oboyade that Obasanjo is an economic illiterate.

The battle between these two noble men does not seem to end anytime soon as many look forward to the day Obasanjo and Soyinka will make peace.

Some reactions from Nigerians on social media suggest;

@Adone0010: Obasanjo has remained a good judge of character, I give it to him.

@FxBoogeyman1: Obj is right. Wole is a bad political analyst

@Good_citizins: Very correct, he is political jobber.
