Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, has formally petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanding the reopening of an investigation and possible prosecution of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over financial crime allegations dating back to 2006.

Speaking after visiting the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, to affirm his petition and answer investigators' questions, Agbonayinma disclosed that the anti-graft agency acknowledged receiving the petition, submitted on August 27, 2026, through his counsel, Chief Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN, on September 1.

The former lawmaker called on the commission to review its September 2006 findings as well as a February 2010 report published by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

Agbonayinma argued that public officials must remain accountable, claiming that previous assurances regarding prosecution following the expiration of constitutional immunity were never fulfilled.

"The laws are meant for both the rich and the poor," Agbonayinma stated, emphasizing that political influence should not shield any citizen from accountability.

He further revealed that alongside his petition to the EFCC, he has submitted a formal petition on the matter to United States President Donald Trump.

The allegations stem from administrative and anti-graft panels conducted during the final years of the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 2006, alongside subsequent US Senate subcommittee inquiries into offshore wire transfers and foreign bank accounts linked to high-profile political figures.
