'The clout chasing is insane' - Nigerians slap Eniola Badmus over false UNGA speech claim

Nigerians have taken to social media to call out Eniola Badmus, Special Assistant to the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Social Events and Public Hearings, after she shared videos and photos claiming she delivered a speech at the just-ended United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The backlash followed her expression of gratitude for being “allowed to speak” at the forum on the theme “Innovation, Gender Inclusion & Partnerships for a Sustainable Energy Future.”

In a post on Instagram, the actress wrote: “Grateful to speak at #UNGA on innovation, gender inclusion & partnerships for a sustainable energy future. I’m also grateful to have attended the Future Africa Forum 2025 at The Africa Center, powered by Afreximbank’s Global Africa Gateway. It was an incredible opportunity to connect, share, and learn alongside brilliant young leaders who are shaping the future of our continent. The conversations, collaborations, and networks built here are priceless, and I look forward to seeing how these connections spark new possibilities for Africa’s growth and transformation.”

Her comments, however, did not sit well with many Nigerians, who questioned the authenticity of her claims.

A user with the handle @aderonke_o wrote: “This is the Nigerian Embassy in New York (Nigerian House) and not the UN building.”

Another, @bakarry, added: “This is the Nigerian Embassy in New York. It was not at the UNGA event and she didn’t even speak. The clout chasing is insane.”

The criticisms have since gone viral, trending across some of Nigeria’s biggest blogs.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at UNGA, announced that Nigeria is targeting annual economic growth of no less than seven percent. He said this ambition would be anchored on macroeconomic stability, improved productivity, and strategic investments in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and transportation.

During bilateral talks with the Namibian delegation on the sidelines of the assembly, Shettima also called for stronger ties between Nigeria and Namibia, stressing that the growth agenda was backed by reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
