Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has announced his retirement from professional football, drawing curtains on an illustrious career that spanned almost two decades.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his social media platforms, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner , reflected on his journey, confirming his decision with mixed emotions.
“After much thought and consideration, with a heart full of mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” stated the 36-year-old who began his football career at Bayelsa United, acknowledging the deep connections and experiences that the sport has provided him.
Regarded as one of the vastly-travelled Nigeria International, Ideye had stints with clubs in Switzerland, France, Russia, Ukraine , Greece, England, China , Spain, Turkey , Kuwait and last turned out for Enyimba International FC of Aba during the 2024/2025 season.
Reflecting on his long-lasting career that saw him winning the NPFL title with Bayelsa United, a double of both the Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk as well as Greek League title with Olympiakos , Ideye gratitude to many people who supported him throughout his career.
He continued: “I would like to first thank God for the talent I was blessed with and for the lengthy career I’ve had the privilege to enjoy.
“This game has given me everything—unimaginable joy, tough days that tested my resolve, the opportunity to travel and witness the world’s beauty, life-long friendships, and countless unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever,” Ideye added.
Decorated with Member of the Niger (MON) as part of the team that won the 2013 AFCON in the famous late Coach Stephen Keshi-led Super Eagles, Ideye also conveyed his heartfelt thanks for being able to represent the nation on the international stage.
“Thank you, Nigeria, for giving me the privilege to wear the national colours and be part of the Super Eagles,” he said.
Throughout his tenure as an international player, Ideye earned over 30 caps for Nigeria, contributing vital goals and demonstrating his significance in securing the country’s third AFCON trophy in 2013.
Despite stepping away from the professional arena, Ideye made it clear that his love for football will endure: “Although my time as a professional player has come to an end, football will always be an integral part of my life as I embark on this next chapter.
“I appreciate everyone for being a part of this incredible journey and I look forward to continuing to engage with the football community,” he concluded.
