Ten Hag makes Boniface U-turn

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface may have a future when the 2025/26 season commences under new manager Erik ten Hag, as the Dutchman appears keen to retain his services, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 24-year-old, who arrived at the Bay Arena from Belgian Jupiler League outfit Royale Union Saint Gilloise in July 2023, enjoyed a fruitful debut campaign which saw him win the German Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal under erstwhile boss and current Real Madrid gaffer Xabi Alonso. He found the back of the net 21 times and provided 10 assists in 37 appearances on his way to an impressive cup double.

However, his second season was a far cry from the first as injury and fitness issues limited his game time. Boniface could only manage just 19 appearances in the top flight, scoring eight goals and contributing two assists across 1,011 minutes of action. His total output for the campaign across all competitions saw him score 11 times and register two assists in 27 games.

Despite the former Bodo Glimt hitman’s reduced playing time toward the end of last season, sources reveal that Ten Hag intends on keeping him as he considers Boniface a vital part of his attack for the forthcoming campaign. He has been linked with an exit away from the Bay Arena during the summer transfer window, although the club’s hierarchy have placed a price tag of €40m to prise him.

Although there have been no concrete offers from interested clubs, reports claim that Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr could relaunch a bid for the Nigerian as they look to replace Colombian striker Jhon Duran, who is set to leave the gulf nation.

Al Nassr had almost sealed the acquisition of Boniface during the January winter transfer window before the move fell through at the last minute and they turned their attention to Duran. Now, it is yet to be seen if Boniface would be swayed by the millions in the oil-rich country and switch destinations this summer.
