To Tattoo or Not To Tattoo
Musicians, rappers, actors, athletes, and other celebrities have tattoos because they know they are unlikely to get a regular job or start a business. The tattoos add to their mystique and notoriety. But how many Presidents, billionaire tech entrepreneurs, business moguls, or technocrats have you seen with tattoos?
Habit Two of The Seven Laws of Highly Effective People is, 'Begin with the End in Mind'.
Before you get a tattoo, think about the consequences. I don't know if it is a sin, and I don't think it is one. And I may be wrong.
However, that it might not be a sin does not mean it can't sink your life.
Having a tattoo can make you unemployable in certain industries. Especially if it is in a conspicuous part of your body. Even if it is in a hidden part of your body, and a colleague finds out, that piece of information can be used against you in a corporate environment.
In romance, many women love tattooed men—as boy toys or a bit of rough. But some of them, or maybe the majority, may be unlikely to take them home to meet mum and dad. To such women, you are just a fun experience. But when they are ready to settle down, they look for someone who fits the bill physically.
Believe it or not, I had cornrow braids when I worked and schooled in England. But when I got a job at Aso Rock, Nigeria, I cut them.
Image matters to humans. And every corporate environment or government office has an image they are trying to project.
If you are approached by two marketers working for two different banks, one with a tattoo and the other without, who are you likely to open an account with?
Okay, if you are about to have surgery and the doctor walks in with tats, are you likely to feel confident about the operation?
Suppose two airlines place a billboard advert with two male pilots. One with tattoos and an earring, and the other without, which airline will you be inclined to patronise?
You see, perception is reality!
To many people, a tattoo on a man makes him look thuggish and irresponsible. Listen to me. I am not saying that a tattooed man is an irresponsible thug. Many people who have tattoos are some of the most decent people.
What I am saying is that it makes you look thuggish and irresponsible. Looks can be deceptive. But that is how humans make impulse-driven choices.
You are an ordinary human being. You are not a perfect man, Yeshua (Jesus), Who can read thoughts. Therefore, you make snap judgments. And those instant decisions are influenced by what you see.
These are just a few suggestions I have for the youth. A tattoo is like virginity. Your friends may laugh at you for not having a tattoo. But understand one thing. Tomorrow, you can be like them. But forever, they can never be like you.
So, think twice before deciding to get one.
