Super Falcons miss 2027 Women's World Cup after South Africa defeat

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will not feature at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup after losing to rivals South Africa in the playoffs.

The 10-time African champions were edged 2-1 by Banyana Banyana, a result that summed up their disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

After a goalless first half, Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane scored two goals after the interval to give Desiree Ellis' side a two-goal cushion.

Christy Ucheibe pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, but it wasn't enough to send the game into extra time.

Justine Madugu's side will now head home after a disappointing campaign in Morocco.

The Black Queens of Ghana secured the other World Cup spot after coming from a goal down to beat Côte d'Ivoire 2-1 in the other playoff encounter.

South Africa and Ghana will now head into the Inter-Confederation play-offs for a place at the tournament.
