Super Eagles midfielder undergoes successful surgery after nasty knee injury

Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has undergone successful surgery following a knee injury sustained during a pre-season match for Getafe.

The Nigerian spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, where he struggled to secure regular playing time. He featured in only 22 matches, logging a total of 477 minutes.

Crystal Palace had the option to make the move permanent but chose not to trigger it. Consequently, he has returned to Getafe amid speculation surrounding a potential exit.

Uche had been a regular fixture during pre-season until a match on August 6, when a harsh tackle from Christian Mawissa left him with a serious injury. Medical staff ultimately had to stretcher him off the pitch.

Subsequent medical scans confirmed that Uche suffered multiple tears to the ligaments and meniscus in his right knee. The severity of the injury necessitated surgery, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

On Wednesday, August 19, Uche shared a photo of himself following the procedure. All smiles, the midfielder expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans and well-wishers for their support during his recovery.

He wrote, “Today I took a very important step in this journey. The surgery went as planned, and now a new chapter begins: recovery.

“First of all, I want to thank Dr. Bertrand Sonnrey-Cottet and his entire team for their great work and for taking care of me throughout the whole process.

“I would also like to thank my agent for being by my side, for his support, and for accompanying me every step of the way. And thank you to Getafe the coaching staff, my teammates, and everyone at the club for being with me from day one.

“Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages, prayed for me, and given me strength. I trust in God and I know that He will give me the strength to overcome this process. Now it’s time to be patient, work hard, and trust the journey. One day closer to coming back. God is great.”

Due to this injury, Uche will miss the rest of the season for Getafe. He will also miss the Super Eagles' 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and likely the tournament finals. This will be a tough period for the versatile 23-year-old, but he will be looking to bounce back stronger next year.
