Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has supported Omoyele Sowore’s claim that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is illegal.
He made this known in an interview with News Central, stating that Egbetokun has exceeded his tenure as IGP but continues to occupy the position.
Farotimi, who was recently released from the Ekiti Police Station after being arrested and taken from Lagos to Ekiti State following a petition filed by Afe Babalola, SAN, the founder of the Afe Babalola University, claimed that Farotimi wrote a book where he described him falsely.
As a result of the treatment meted out to him by the police, Farotimi has expressed his disagreement with the manner in which the IGP leads the Nigeria Police Force.
He stated that Egbetokun is currently in his position because President Bola Tinubu, who believes his powers supersede the constitution, has decreed that he remains in office.
Farotimi said, “Nigeria as a legal entity is full of lies and contradictions. Laws rarely matter in the country we have built. If laws matter, the reality is that Omoyele is completely correct. The Inspector General of Police is illegal. He has exceeded his time in office.
But what the president is telling you is that the law does not matter. The president has decreed, and it has been as decreed. Because if it is not decreed, then it will be in accordance with the law.
And what the law says is that Kayode Egbetokun should retire and should have retired. The decree of the president supersedes the constitution or the law in Nigeria, which is just one of the sickening realities of our existence. But that is just what it is.”
