Reports suggest that governors from the South East have come together to meet with President Bola Tinubu to request the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
They believe that this action will bring peace to the region and create an opportunity for further dialogue on addressing the current security challenges in the region.
The meeting took place at the Lion Building, Government House, Enugu, on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The South East governors also planned to discuss other pressing issues affecting the country with the President.
This was made known in a statement delivered to the media by the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma.
Other governors in attendance included: Alex Otti of Abia, Charles Soludo of Anambra, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and the host governor, Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
The communiqué added: “The Forum deliberated on the reviewed report of the South East Security and Economic Summit held in Owerri on the 28th of September, 2023, and agreed to implement the aspects of the report pertaining to security and economic integration. They affirmed their desire to put actionable plans in place on the key issues agreed upon.”
The Forum also welcomed a delegation that included former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and the Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
