Soldiers intercept bags of cannabis on River Niger

Troops of 63 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have foiled an attempt to smuggle 20 bags of illicit drugs suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) into Asaba, the Delta State capital, through the River Niger.

The soldiers said to be on routine patrol, spotted a speedboat on the waterways.

The occupants fled, abandoning the vessel, after a hot pursuit by the soldiers.

Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Captain George Okupe, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said, “A search was conducted on the boat which led to the discovery of 20 bags of illicit substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.”

The statement added that the recovered drugs were handed over to the Delta State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation.
