No fewer than six persons were feared burnt to death in a fatal road crash that occurred at Ode Aye Junction in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday.

According to an eyewitness, the accident involved a Coaster bus and a Peugeot J5 bus laden with ethanol. The two buses were said to have collided, as one was trying to overtake the other coming from the opposite direction.

Upon collision, the two vehicles reportedly burst into flames.

A source said the Coastal bus, belonging to Akure North Local Government Area secretariat, was conveying passengers to a social function in Okitipupa.

The source said, “The two vehicles collided after one of them wrongly overtook a car at a dangerous bend close to Oluwa River and the two vehicles caught fire immediately after the collision.

“As we are talking now, six people were burnt beyond recognition while some other victims have been rushed to a hospital in Ore.”

Another eyewitness said residents of the nearby community tried to put out the fire but it became an impossible task because of the flammable nature of ethanol loaded in the J5 vehicle.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, saying details of the accident were still sketchy.

“I don’t have the details about the casualty figure yet but our men are still there trying to rescue those who have not died,” Odunlami said.
