Simy Nwankwo is closing in on Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s European record after netting another goal for Crotone on Saturday.

The in-form Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Simy Nwankwo increased his tally for the season to 16 goals with a goal in Crotone’s 3-2 defeat in week 30 of the Italian Serie A.

The goal means Nwankwo extended his record as the highest goal scorer in Europe’s top five leagues since March, despite playing for a struggling side.

Since the start of March, the 28-year-old has also netted nine goals in the last six appearances for Crotone.

His tally of 16 Serie A goals also means he’s the current highest scoring Nigerian striker in Europe’s top five leagues and only Yakubu Aiyegbeni has scored more goals in a single top-5 European League campaign when he netted 17 for Blackburn Rovers in 2012.

Simy Nwankwo needs just two goals from the remaining eight league games to and set another record for most goal by a Nigerian in a single season in Europe top five league.
