Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has expressed optimism that Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman will return to action this weekend after picking up a knock in their recent Copa del Rey final defeat.
Lookman was withdrawn in the latter stages of the game, initially raising concerns over the nature of the substitution. However, the club later confirmed that the forward experienced minor physical discomfort and was subsequently placed on an individual recovery programme as a precaution.
The 28-year-old was left out of the squad for Atlético’s midweek clash against Elche, but Simeone is hopeful he will be available for Saturday’s home fixture against Athletic Bilbao.
“It’s possible that both Sørloth and Lookman will be available on Saturday, based on what the doctors are saying,” Simeone said.
While the injury initially cast doubt over his availability, the positive update will come as a major boost for Atlético ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final showdown with Arsenal FC next week.
Following their Copa del Rey disappointment, the Champions League now represents Atlético’s only realistic path to silverware this season. Simeone’s side have endured an inconsistent domestic campaign, making their European run even more significant.
Lookman, who joined the club in January, has played a key role in their progression to the latter stages of the competition. The Nigerian forward scored the decisive goal in Atlético’s 3-2 aggregate victory over FC Barcelona, taking his tally to eight goals in 21 appearances in the competition.
Among Nigerian players, only Victor Osimhen and Obafemi Martins have scored more goals in the Champions League, with 16 and nine respectively.
This season alone, Lookman has registered three goals and four assists in 13 appearances in the competition, underlining his importance to the team’s attacking output. Should he maintain that form, he could yet surpass Martins’ record before the end of the campaign.
With fitness concerns easing, Atlético will be hoping their in-form forward returns in time to play a decisive role in what remains of their European ambitions.
