Religious leader Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has denied reports that he was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS). The allegation was made by former presidential candidate and African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Peter Obi, who claimed that the arrest occurred shortly after he visited Sheikh Umar in Kaduna.
Obi said, “This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened, and where citizens and perceived political opponents face harassment and unnecessary persecution. This cannot be allowed to continue.”
He called on authorities to defend freedom and free speech, which are the hallmarks of every democratic society.
“Suppression and intimidation of dissent can never stand in a democratic society, and this Nigerian government must understand this fact.
“I respectfully call on all those bent on undermining our already fragile democracy to please stop and apply the rule of law and tenets of democracy in dealing with citizens.”
In a social media video, Sheikh Umar rejected the claim, clarifying that he was only invited by the DSS for questioning.
He emphasized that he was never detained and assured that he is safe and in good health after his meeting with the secret police.
Sheikh Umar said, "I come today to correct a false report being circulated in some quarters. I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning. I cooperated fully, and I was released. I am free, safe and well.
"I want to appeal to all our supporters and to all citizens of Kaduna State, remain calm, remain peaceful adn remain law-abiding citizens. No one should take the law into their hands. No one should create disorder in the name of loyalty.
"On the matter of our leader, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, let us be patient and allow due process to take its course. Let us continue to pray, and let us keep the peace. To everyone dissatisfied with the current system, your answer is very simple - Register,l vote and choose better leadership when the time comes."
