Islamic cleric Sheikh Abubakar Gumi has called for a marshal plan to phase out the Almajiri system of education in the northern part of Nigeria.
In a Facebook post, Sheikh Gumi called for a new system that blends moral education with modernity.
He said, "Northern Nigeria, with approximately 150 public (federal & state) and private universities, is expected to lead the educational sector of Nigerian society in the next fifteen years.
"What should be done is to implement a 'Marshall plan' to phase out the Almajiri system, combining a curriculum that blends moral education with modernity. Therefore, we need peace."
One Fittoka Wubatwe Golda said, "Honestly I love hearing this from you sir. However, I strongly believe that the north has deliberately refused to phase out this so called Almajiri system. Goodluck Jonathan, being a southerner did everything possible to see to it's end, but the major resistance was from the northern elites. I suspect the northern elites are benefitting from the Almajiri system, hence their attitude whenever there's call for its abolition."
Usman Usman said, "I completely agree with this thoughtful position. With the sheer number of universities in Northern Nigeria, the region truly has the capacity to become an educational and intellectual leader in the country over the next 15 years. Implementing a well-structured “Marshall Plan” to responsibly phase out the Almajiri system is both timely and necessary especially one that integrates moral and religious education with modern skills, science, and critical thinking. This will not only preserve values but also equip young people to thrive in today’s world. Of course, none of this is possible without peace, security, and collective will from government, religious leaders, and communities. We sincerely appreciate Dr. Gumi for consistently raising these crucial issues with courage and clarity, and for advocating long-term, sustainable solutions for the future of the North and Nigeria as a whole."
Grace Boy said, "This is a valid point. This is how leaders speak. Everyone is allowed to study their religion as a course but make western education mandatory or compulsory to eradicate illiteracy. Nice one Gumi."
