Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani took a friendly jab at former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo in a post on social media.
Sani shared a photo of himself and the ex-president on his social media page on Thursday, May 16, with the caption: "When I was teasing Ex-President Obasanjo and reminding him how we were harassed by prison warders in Kiri Kiri Prison in 1995; when we were both serving a life sentence for treason."
Both men were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995. Obasanjo was arrested and convicted for being part of a planned coup, as he had been critical of the government of the military dictator, Sani Abacha.
Despite protesting his innocence, Obasanjo was imprisoned, and it was during his time in prison that he reportedly became a born-again Christian.
Sani, a human rights activist, was also arrested and jailed by successive past military regimes.
Sani was fortunate to be released from life imprisonment when democracy was restored in Nigeria in 1999.
Recalling his experience with Obasanjo in a post in 2022, Sani wrote: “When the Military Tribunal Judge in Lagos sentenced Obj to life imprisonment for treason and sentenced me and Dr. Beko to life imprisonment plus 7 years for treason, Obj turned to me and asked, ‘young man, which one are you going to start with, the 7 years or the life imprisonment?’”
Sani remembered that when they were in Kiri Kiri prison together, no prisoner wanted to serve Obasanjo because he hardly left any food for the boys who washed their dishes.
