Sevilla coach, Adams eye Barca upset

Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda and Super Eagles striker Akor Adams have both expressed belief that their side can cause an upset against La Liga leaders Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Sunday (today), despite the Andalusian club’s wretched record at the ground stretching back 23 years without a league win, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Adams, Sevilla’s top scorer in La Liga this season with seven goals, was on the scoresheet when the clubs last met in October, coming off the bench to complete a memorable 4-1 home victory. Speaking to Marca ahead of the return fixture, the Nigerian striker acknowledged the scale of the challenge but insisted football always offers the chance to rewrite history.

“We’re continuing to train and prepare. Yes, they’re the league leaders and have an incredible group of players. But we’re going there knowing what can happen in a match — you can win, lose, or draw. Right now, we’re working hard to see how we can compete and give our best,” he said.

Asked about Sevilla’s poor Camp Nou record, Adams remained defiant. “Yes, but the great thing about football is that you have the opportunity to make history in every match,” he said.

Almeyda, for his part, has urged Adams to deliver when it matters most, praising the 25-year-old’s attitude in training while calling on him to step up against elite opposition.

“What I can tell is that he is doing well. Like all his teammates, he’s motivated, aware of what’s at stake. Everything we’re playing for is very close, and everyone is important.

“And whenever the strikers score, that’s what we need. So I’d say that after scoring a goal, he must be very motivated. Especially with the opponent we’re going to face,” the Argentine coach said.

Sevilla also received a boost ahead of the trip to Catalonia, with winger Chidera Ejuke returning to training on Thursday after missing a session on Wednesday due to discomfort.

The Nigerian winger, who has featured in 22 games across all competitions this season, assisted Adams’ goal in the 4-1 victory over Barcelona earlier in the campaign and could again play a role off the bench.

Sevilla sit 14th in the table with 31 points, six clear of the relegation zone, while Barcelona lead La Liga by four points from Real Madrid. The Catalans head into the weekend game after a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, but have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two clubs.
