The Nigerian Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) after all statutory procedures at the polling unit are completed.

Under the approved provision, the Presiding Officer is expected to ensure that the election results are duly signed by the Presiding Officer, party agents, and security officials present before they are electronically uploaded. This step is aimed at strengthening credibility, promoting transparency, and preserving the integrity of the electoral process.

The Senate unanimously rose on Tuesday after an emergency sitting, during which it was agreed that the amendment would enhance public confidence while ensuring that the process remains orderly and verifiable.

By allowing results to be transmitted to IReV after certification, lawmakers emphasised that the development represents another significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic evolution, reinforcing openness in result management and enabling citizens to follow the electoral process more transparently.

The Senate therefore clarified that the Upper Chamber is in tune with the yearnings of the citizens, while urging all electoral stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and voters, to support measures that deepen trust in democratic institutions and strengthen the nation's electoral framework.
