The fortunes of security personnel at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital changed after one of them boldly revealed their monthly salary to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
The guard, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, told the governor that they earn just ₦18,800 monthly while pleading for an upward adjustment due to the current economic hardship.
“We are suffering. I have a family with three children. Please help us,” he cried out.
Governor Makinde, who listened attentively, then asked how much they earned as salary.
“₦18,800,” the guard responded.
A top hospital official, however, clarified that the security guards were not direct staff of the hospital. He explained that security services had been outsourced to a private company, which was being paid ₦27,000 for each security officer provided.
In response, Governor Makinde immediately ordered that all 67 security guards be converted to ad hoc workers and placed on a monthly salary of ₦80,000, effective October 1. He also directed that the hospital terminate its contract with the private security firm.
The governor had visited the hospital on Tuesday, September 30, for an interactive session with workers of the institution.
