The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to intending Muslim pilgrims in the state to embrace the newly introduced Hajj Savings Scheme.

A statement on Monday said he gave the advice during the inauguration of the scheme at the Eko FM Marquee, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, noted that the scheme was designed by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria to avail less privileged Muslims the opportunity of saving enough money over a period of time when the money would be able to facilitate their travelling to Saudi Arabia to fulfil a major pillar of Islam.

He described the initiative as a welcome development, especially as it was coming at a time that the global economic meltdown was affecting everyone.

Sanwo-Olu also appealed to everyone to protect themselves against the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The disease is still very much around and active. We must therefore ensure that we know our status and adhere strictly to the laid down protocols of social distancing, regular handwashing with soap and running water, using of hand sanitisers and wearing of face masks. Also, avoid hugging, handshake and large gatherings,” he added.
