Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and the wife of the deputy governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, have called for an increase in the participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics professions.

Samwo-Olu and Hamzat, who were the mother of the day and distinguished guest of honour, respectively, gave this charge on Thursday at the first international hybrid conference of ‘Women in Technical Education and Employment’ at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

The conference was titled, ‘Gender and Sustainable Development Goals in Africa-Challenges and Progress.’

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs Abosede Ogundimu, said the role of women in nation-building could not be relegated.

“I appeal to members of this association to continue enhancing the participation of women in technology education at all levels.

“Aside the fact that women are the strong pillar in the home front, women are also making a serious impact and leading the way in running businesses. It is on this premise that I commend WITED for their passion and commitment to protecting the interest of women in this sector, especially towards ensuring their career growth.”

Similarly, Hamzat who was represented by the wife of the chairman, Odi-Olowo Local Council Development Area, Mrs Kehinde Ajala, explained that the roles of women in technical education and employment could not be underestimated, especially in realizing the Gender Sustainable Development Goals.

Coordinator, WITED, Yaba College of Technology, Dr Oluseun Popoola also said, “The challenges of gender and sustainable development could be overcome when every male see the empowerment of females as a process of empowering the nation.”
