Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre has urged security agencies to act quickly to rescue the 46 schoolchildren and their teachers abducted by terrorists in Oyo State, along with others kidnapped from different parts of the country.
In a statement on Friday, he expressed deep concern over the ongoing trauma suffered by Nigerians, notably mentioning the death of a teacher beheaded by terrorists.
He described the suffering of these victims, including a two-year-old, as an extreme distress for their families.
"However, these 46 are not alone; many more victims across Nigeria endure similar fates, their stories often going unheard. The people in South West Nigeria live in fear due to escalating violence in their region. This violence has been happening in other regions for years," Adeyemi said.
He expressed regret that Nigeria's current system, with its limited opportunities for social mobility, results in millions of young people lacking education, skills, or jobs. He noted that this environment fosters bandits, kidnappers, corrupt officials, and cybercriminals, ultimately hindering human potential for everyone except the elite.
He urged citizens not to wait for unbearable circumstances to force a discussion about Nigeria's future. "Instead, we should engage in this dialogue intentionally and now. The need for a national conversation about our country’s future is urgent. While some aspire for an economically advanced Nigeria, others, including powerful figures, seem indifferent," he said.
He called on citizens to demand a national discussion as a genuine display of leadership, instead of waiting for a savior. He entrusted the elite with the duty of initiating this dialogue and imagining an economically prosperous Nigeria that celebrates our diversity and core values.
"Continuing on our current path is not an option. We must view our challenges as unprecedented opportunities to build a new nation that works for everyone. Together, we can achieve this, God helping us," Adeyemi said.
