Nigerian Premier League club, Rivers United has suspended two of its key players over unethical and unsportsmanlike conduct.

This was announced in a statement by the club’s general manager, Chief Dr Okey Kpalukwu, on Monday, March 1, 2021.

Both Ifeanyi Anaemena and Theophilus Afelokhai feature for the Super Eagles.

The statement read: The management of Rivers United FC has handed goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokai and defender Ifeanyi Anaemena an indefinite suspension for unethical & unprofessional sportsman conduct.

The indefinite suspension takes immediate effect pending the outcome of an investigation on the matter.

Anaemena and Afelokhai’s suspension comes after Rivers United lost 3-0 to Akwa United in their NPFL clash on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Although the statement revealed they were suspended due to unethical and unsportsmanlike conduct, it is believed that the two Super Eagles stars are being punished for their error in the 3-0 loss.

Both Anaemena and Afelokhai were culpable for one of the three goals after failing to pass out from the back properly, which allowed Charles Atshimene to score the second goal.

Anaemena and Afelokhai both joined Rivers from Enyimba in 2020. The two Super Eagles stars are among the senior players in the Rivers squad, but it remains to be seen if they have a future at the club.
