There are reports that thirteen Boko Haram terrorists who had previously surrendered escaped with rifles and motorcycles provided by the Borno State government to assist the military in the fight against the insurgents.

Boko Haram insurgents allegedly fled with rifles and motorcycles supplied by the Borno State government to support the military in the battle against insurgency.

Thirteen Boko Haram insurgents who had surrendered and asked for forgiveness after their crimes are said to have escaped.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State had previously announced that 160,000 Boko Haram members and their families voluntarily surrendered to the military.

It has been reported that the “repentant” Boko Haram members and their families are being managed under the Borno Model, a post-conflict amnesty programme that focuses on deradicalisation, rehabilitation, reintegration and resettlement of low-risk persons previously associated with armed insurgent groups.

Reports indicate that nearly 6,000 combatants are awaiting “transitional justice” with some former fighters being incorporated into the fight against insurgency by the Borno State Government, aiding the military in reaching deep into the terrorists strongholds.

These “repentant” fighters have proven to be valuable assets to the military and are now referred to as “hybrid forces.”
