Reno Omokri dismisses claim that govt money funded wife's N5m handbag

Ambassador to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has dismissed a claim that his wife could afford a handbag worth N5 million because he got a government appointment.

The claim was made by a social media user, Nwodo, who said the luxury is the reason why Omokri keeps supporting President Bola Tinubu.

He wrote, "Few days in Mexico, your wife is carrying a N5 million handbag. Why won't Tinubu continue? Mad people everywhere."

Reacting, Omokri said the bag was purchased long before he was officially recognised as Nigeria's ambassador to Mexico.

"Thank you for your feedback. This photo of my wife and I was taken on Thursday, April 30, 2026, during the orientation for new Ambassadors. I have not received any public funds, nor have I accessed any budget.

"Everything my wife and I are wearing in this photo, including the bag, is made in Nigeria.

"Since I left office as a Presidential spokesman in 2015, I have been an investor, recognised by the world's number one investment-focused magazine, Business Insider, as the most influential investor online in Africa.

"How my wife and I spend private funds we made legally and morally is our concern.

"However, if you have evidence of any financial malfeasance on my part, I counsel you to make it public and also to initiate a petition against me to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission," he shared.
